TRP Spyre Mechanical Disc Brake Caliper
The gold standard in mechanical disc brakes. Not a compromise: a choice.
There are riders who prefer mechanical disc brakes. Not because they cannot afford hydraulic, not because they do not know the difference, but because they want a brake system that can be adjusted on the road with tools they carry, that does not require a bleed kit or mineral oil, and that delivers consistent performance year after year with minimal maintenance. For those riders, the TRP Spyre is the answer. While Avid's BB7s are cheaper, they only come in a post mount configuration and are far less powerful than Spyres. The Spyre is the caliper that mechanical disc brake advocates actually use.
Dual-Sided Pad Actuation - The Critical Difference: The Spyre is a dual piston actuated mechanical disc brake caliper which provides precise clamping force. This translates into even pad and rotor wear because the rotor does not need to flex to one side during braking. This is the fundamental design advantage over every single-piston mechanical caliper on the market. Single-piston mechanical calipers move one pad into the rotor, which means the rotor has to flex slightly to contact the fixed pad leading to uneven force, uneven wear, and a brake feel that degrades unevenly over time. The Spyre moves both pads simultaneously, from both sides, exactly as a hydraulic caliper does. The dual-pull design provides a more even and progressive brake feel and performance, as well as giving better power, better pad positioning, and delivering more even pad wear.
Tool-Free Pad Adjustment A simple cable barrel adjuster makes fine-tuning easy. Independent pad adjustment on both the inboard and outboard sides means you can center the caliper precisely without fighting the mounting bolts. Getting the best performance from a cable-operated disc brake relies on a good setup, using a compressionless outer cable, ferrules, and of course a compatible brake lever. When paired with Jagwire KEB-SL compressionless housing, which we stock and recommend alongside this caliper, the Spyre delivers a lever feel that is firm, direct, and consistent from the first ride.
Works with Every Cable-Actuated Road Lever The Spyre works with ALL cable actuated road levers. Whether you are running Shimano GRX, SRAM, Sensah Empire, or any other mechanical drop bar or flat bar lever, the Spyre is compatible. No proprietary cable pull ratio, no specific lever requirement. It works with whatever you have.
40mm Slim Profile Clearance Where It Counts: At just 40mm across, the tidy aluminum caliper is more than 20mm narrower than Avid's workhorse BB7. For heel clearance on road builds and for frame clearance on bikes with limited chainstay width, that 20mm difference is significant. The slim profile is one of the reasons the Spyre works on frames where bulkier mechanical calipers create clearance problems.
Shimano B-Type Compatible Pads: TRP's own ultra-grippy semi-metallic pads are Shimano B-Type compatible, allowing for further customization. When the included pads wear out, and semi-metallic pads last well under normal conditions, Shimano B-type replacement pads are available at every bike shop in the world. No proprietary pad hunting required.
The Serviceability Argument: Riders who tour, commute year-round, or ride in remote areas often choose mechanical disc brakes specifically because a hydraulic bleed is not something you can do on the road or in the field. A cable can be replaced anywhere, with tools that weigh grams. A barrel adjuster can be turned with cold fingers in the rain. Xavier, a Merlin Cycles reviewer, put it simply: "Best mechanical caliper ever used and I am tired of replacing the oil in hydraulic brakes." The Spyre is the correct caliper for riders who have made that calculation.

Compatibility Notes
Post mount: fits post mount brake mounts on frame and fork directly. For IS mount frames and forks, an IS-to-PM adapter is required: this is the correct configuration for the Evercoast Passage frame and fork.
Rotor size: ships with mounting hardware for 160mm rotors. For 180mm rotors, a post mount adapter is required. For eBike use we recommend 180mm rotors — see our Shimano SM-RT66 and SM-RT86 rotor listings.
Housing: compressionless brake housing is strongly recommended for best performance. We stock the Jagwire KEB-SL, which is the housing we install on all mechanical disc brake builds at the Evercoast workshop.
Sold individually: price is per caliper. A complete front and rear build requires two calipers.
Perfect For
Riders who prefer mechanical disc brakes for serviceability, touring, and remote riding. Builds where the existing levers are cable-actuated and a full hydraulic conversion is not planned. Evercoast Passage builds running mechanical groupsets — the Spyre is the caliper we use on Passage builds where the IS fork mount requires a post mount caliper. eBike brake upgrades where a significant mechanical improvement is preferred over a hydraulic conversion.
Sold individually — one caliper per listing. Post mount.
