Brooks B17 Leather Saddle
Some saddles are components. The Brooks B17 is furniture. First introduced in 1898 and barely changed since, the B17 is the saddle that serious touring cyclists, long-distance commuters, and anyone who spends real time in the saddle keeps coming back to — not because it is the most modern option available, but because nothing else does what it does after it has been broken in to your body.
The Break-In: What Makes It Different
The B17 is firm out of the box. Deliberately so. The thick vegetable-tanned leather top is stretched over a steel frame and tensioned at the nose. It does not give immediately because it is not supposed to. Over 300–500 kilometres of riding the leather gradually moulds to the exact contours of your sit bones, creating a hammock-like cradle that is shaped to you and no one else. Riders who have broken in a B17 consistently describe the same experience: the saddle disappears beneath them. It stops being something they sit on and becomes part of the bike.
That break-in period is not a flaw. It is the mechanism. A saddle that conforms precisely to your anatomy is more comfortable over six hours than any foam saddle that feels good in the first five minutes.
Vegetable-Tanned Leather: Handmade in England
Every B17 is handcrafted at Brooks' factory in Smethwick, England using vegetable-tanned leather: the same tanning process used for premium leather goods for centuries. The leather is thick, consistent, and treated with Brooks Proofide saddle dressing before it leaves the factory. The rivets are hand-hammered. The rails are solid steel. There is no plastic in the construction. Made in England, as it has been for over 125 years.
Gets Better With Age: Indefinitely
A synthetic foam saddle has a finite lif: the foam compresses over time and eventually stops providing meaningful support. The B17 goes in the opposite direction. The leather continues to develop and deepen in character with use, the fit continues to improve as it conforms further to your body, and the colour develops a patina that makes each saddle genuinely unique. Riders report using the same B17 for 8,000, 10,000, 15,000 miles and beyond. One reviewer noted owning the same saddle for 40 years across multiple bikes. That is not hyperbole. It is the material property of well-maintained leather.
Saddle Bag Eyelets: Touring Ready
Loops at the rear of the saddle accept a traditional leather saddle bag: a functional carryover from the original 1898 design that remains relevant for the touring and commuter rider who wants to carry tools and a spare tube without a seat post bag clamp. Compatible with Brooks and most traditional style saddle bags.
Proofide: Maintenance Made Simple
The B17 requires periodic treatment with Brooks Proofide saddle dressing to maintain the leather's suppleness and water resistance, approximately two to four times per year depending on use and conditions. We stock Brooks Proofide at the workshop. Neglected leather will dry and eventually crack. Treated leather lasts decades. The maintenance commitment is modest. The reward is a saddle that outlasts the bike.
Three Colours: Each Distinctive
The B17 is available in three leather colours. Black is the most versatile: clean on any build and develops a subtle sheen with use. Honey is the classic Brooks look: a warm amber tone that deepens to a rich brown over years of riding and pairs beautifully with tanwall tires and chromoly steel. Brown sits between the two: a darker, earthier tone with the same character development as honey. Each colour is the same saddle. The choice is purely aesthetic and entirely personal.
