Shimano spent two years consulting gravel riders across the world before building GRX: racing it, bikepacking it, riding it in all conditions on every surface and the result is a groupset that is not a road drivetrain with gravel branding but a ground-up design for mixed-surface cycling. This is the complete drivetrain specification as used on the Evercoast Passage GRX, assembled and certified at our Kitsilano workshop.

GRX RX600 Shifters with Gravel-Specific Ergonomics: The ST-RX600 dual-control levers were designed specifically for gravel riding: not adapted from a road lever but engineered from scratch for the conditions that define gravel cycling. The lever axis is raised 18mm above standard road position for better control when riding in the hoods, improved grip, and increased leverage that reduces hand fatigue on long challenging rides. A ribbed surface texture keeps your fingers in place on bumpy descents. Raised hood design ensures a secure hand position whenever the unexpected arrives. Right lever shifts and controls the rear brake. Left lever controls the front brake.

GRX RX400 Hydraulic Disc Brakes Offer Multiple Braking Positions: The BR-RX400 hydraulic disc calipers deliver consistent, well-modulated stopping power regardless of weather or terrain. Two-piston flat mount construction, designed for 160mm rotors. The brake lever design specifically accommodates multiple handlebar positions: hoods, drops, and tops, so you can brake with confidence from wherever your hands happen to be when the unexpected arrives on a gravel descent. Hydraulic means no cable stretch, no housing compression, no dead travel before the pads bite.

GRX RX600 Crankset with 40T, 172.5mm: The FC-RX600-1 is a 1x-specific crankset with Shimano's Hollowtech II spindle interface. 40T chainring, 172.5mm crank arm length. The GRX chainline features 2.5mm more clearance than a conventional road crankset: a deliberate design choice that allows for wider tire clearances and broader wheel sizes, relevant for a gravel bike running 40mm+ tires.

GRX Shadow RD+ Rear Derailleur with Clutch: The RD-RX600 features Shimano's Shadow RD+ clutch mechanism, originally developed for aggressive mountain bike use and applied here to gravel. The low-profile design reduces chain slap, improves chain retention, and minimizes the risk of catching obstacles on technical terrain. Switch it to ON mode when the road turns rough and the chain stays where it belongs: on the chainring regardless of what the ground is doing underneath you. Compatible with up to 42T maximum sprocket.

Shimano Deore XT M8000 Cassette11-42T, 11-Speed: The CS-M8000 is Shimano's Deore XT mountain cassette: a deliberate spec upgrade above what most bikes in this price range use. XT-grade cassettes combine aluminum and steel sprockets to reduce weight while maintaining the wear resistance that matters on a drivetrain used year-round. The 11-42T range gives you a genuine bail-out gear for steep climbs under load without sacrificing high-end speed on flat sections. Hyperglide tooth profiling delivers fast, consistent shifting in both directions across all 11 sprockets.

Shimano CN-HG701 GRX 11-Speed Chain: The CN-HG701 is Shimano's own GRX-specification chain — designed and optimised specifically for GRX drivetrains. SIL-TEC fluorine coating reduces friction and improves durability compared to a standard nickel-plated chain. Hyperglide+ engagement is calibrated to work precisely with the GRX cassette and chainring combination. Quick-link included. This is the correct replacement chain for this drivetrain.

What's Included

Not included: Bottom bracket, rotors, cables, housing, bar tape. For a Passage Pro build we recommend the Shimano BB-RS501 bottom bracket and Shimano SM-RT66 160mm 6-bolt rotors.

Compatibility Notes

Standard HG 11-speed drivetrain: compatible with any Shimano HG 11-speed chain and cassette. No proprietary standards, no ecosystem lock-in. Replacement parts are available at any bike shop in the world.

Brake caliper standards - Passage vs Passage Pro: The Evercoast Passage Pro is flat mount native front and rear — the BR-RX400 flat mount calipers in this groupset install directly without adapters. This is the recommended groupset for a Passage Pro build.

The Evercoast Passage frame and fork use IS brake mounts. IS-to-flat-mount adapters do not exist for IS forks, so the Passage runs Shimano Deore M6100 post mount calipers front and rear via IS-to-PM adapters instead of the flat mount BR-RX400 calipers included in this groupset. If you are building on a Passage frame, the brake calipers will differ from what is listed here — speak to us at the workshop and we will spec the correct calipers for your build.

Bottom bracket: not included. FC-RX600-1 uses Shimano Hollowtech II and is compatible with BSA 68mm English thread frames. For a Passage or Passage Pro build, the Shimano BB-RS501 is the correct bottom bracket.

Rotors: not included. BR-RX400 calipers are designed for 160mm flat mount. For a Passage Pro build we recommend the Shimano SM-RT66 160mm 6-bolt rotor. For a Passage build running M6100 post mount calipers, rotor compatibility will be confirmed at the workshop.
